Grape seed capsules 

Grape seed extract is a product of whole grape seeds. The extract, which is often abbreviated as GSE, is obtained after the seeds have gone through industrial processing. The grape seeds are obtained in bulk by collecting them as a by-product of grape juice and the winemaking process.
Grape seed extract that is to be used in dietary supplement is available in different forms: capsules, tablets, powder, and liquid extracts. To obtain grape seed extract of optimal quality, the seeds have to be dried, ground, and pulverised. Pulverisation aids in crushing the seeds into the finest and most bio-available form for easier absorption into the body. Grape seed powder obtained from the ground seeds has a slightly bitter taste. Most people, therefore, prefer taking it alongside a sweetener e.g. honey. In some instances, the seeds are also pressed to produce grape seed oil, before the residue is disposed of. While coming up with the extract, certain grape seeds are found to have higher compositions of bioactive compounds than others. This is due to such external factors as soil properties, climatic conditions, and pest infestation of the fruit and parent plant by extension.

Grape seed extract has a rich history that spans over a couple of centuries. It was highlighted in the 18th century, as one of the food-derived products that were being studied for their varied health benefits. The extract is considered as a botanical composition since it is entirely made from plant products i.e. grape seeds. The extract is obtained from mixing monomeric and oligomeric flavanols, which are both contained in the aforementioned seeds. Post World War II, there was a lot of renewed interest that made many researchers and scientists dive into product-specific research. Grape seeds were hence studied for their herbal, phytogenic, and biochemical limits being explored to the fullest. Hungarian researcher Albert Szent-Györgyi played a key role in transforming grape seed extract into what it is today. He was able to point out the bioactive component present in the seeds i.e. flavonoids. Initially, such compounds were classified as vitamins before it was discovered that the two had distinct properties. Around 1947, another French researcher, Jack Masquelier came into the picture. He was able to point out the specific group of flavonoids that were contained in grape seeds i.e. proanthocyanidins. He obtained a colourless fraction from his research, which contained monomeric and oligomeric flavanols. By the 1970s, the extract had started gaining popularity, especially in Asia, the United States, and Europe. Presently, grape seed extract is a constituent in different body care products, especially those applied on the skin and hair. It is also contained in ointments which are applied on various skin defects e.g. burns, cuts, scars, and blemishes.
