About MSM
MSM, better known as methyl-sulfonyl-methane, is a naturally occurring compound that contains high proportions of sulfur. Some of the common names used to refer to the compound include dimethyl sulfone, methyl sulfone, crystalline dimethyl sulfoxide, organic sulfur, etc. MSM is described as the most bioavailable form of the essential mineral sulfur. It is found in plants, animals, and human beings; however, it is found in relatively small portions in plants. Before researchers learned about MSM, some of the popular sources of sulfur that most people depended on include cow milk, grains, fruits, vegetables, and alcoholic drinks e.g. beer and wine. When taken, these foods and beverages boost body microbiota which results in increased MSM levels.
MSM has previously been used as a commercial solvent before it was adopted for health applications. It has the ability to tolerate high temperatures and has profound magnetic properties. Also, it is aprotic meaning that the molecules that make up the compound have zero hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen atoms. This set of properties are similar to those of the parent compound, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). MSM powder is obtained after a set of energy-efficient reactions between sulfur and methane. DMSO is first oxidised by reacting it with hydrogen peroxide, after which the product is passed through either of two chemical processes: crystallisation or distillation. In the case where MSM is obtained in food, there are a series of events that have to happen in the earth's sulfur cycle for it to be synthesised. Also, in food, MSM is contained in parts per million therefore a lot of food would have to be consumed to accumulate a substantial amount of MSM. MSM capsules, which have been produced synthetically, contain high proportions of the compound and don’t have to be taken in bulk to complete sulfur body needs.
Extensive research on DMSO, and MSM by association, can be traced back to the 1950s. One of the most outstanding attributes of DMSO that came up during this time was its ability to penetrate cell membranes both in the presence and absence of co-transport forces. The latter was first tried out on animals, specifically rabbits, before it was eventually deemed fit for consumption by humans. It was also tested on horses, where it was reported to improve the joints, hooves, and skin. MSM synthesises collagen hence its varied uses in the skin and beauty world. One of the most popular narratives on the successful use of MSM was done by Mike Wallace who worked for a CBS television program, 60 minutes. The show embarked on following the journey to recovery of one, Sandy Sherrick, who sustained serious body injuries after a car accident, including dire whiplash and nerve destruction. She was undergoing therapy under the guidance of Dr. Stanley Jacob, the godfather’’ of MSM. The latter, alongside other researchers from the University of Oregon, played a key role in the popularisation and development of MSM. Taking MSM was part of the corrective treatment that was prescribed for her. Since then, the use of MSM has grown and more people have included it in their regimens for various health and beauty reasons.
