About Boswellia

The boswellia serrata tree, commonly referred to as Indian frankincense is a deciduous tree. The tree is native to India and other highland territories in the Middle East and Northern Africa e.g. Pakistan and Egypt respectively. Boswellia resin has a charming, exotic odor especially when burned as incense. Most people burn it alongside other resins for a combination of different auras. To obtain the resin, which is the most potent product of the tree, the tree trunk is slashed through small incisions after which the resin is left to flow. The resin, which also comprises gum, solidifies into tear-shaped extract. In certain regions, the resin is referred to as guggulu or shallaki. To obtain the resin in its purest form, it is cured in specially designed bamboo crates. It is then broken into smaller bits and then graded based on colour and shape. The term boswellia serrata is derived from two words, boswellia and seratta. The generic name, boswellia, was given after Dr James Boswell of Edinburgh Botanical Garden. The latter played a key role in the discovery of the potency and benefits of the boswellia tree. The specific name, serrata, is obtained from the term serra. The latter refers to a saw due to the resemblance to the toothed leaf margins.

The boswellia serrata tree is a moderately sized tree that has numerous loosely hanging branches. It normally grows to a height of between 9-15m. In certain regions, the tree is tall, especially where it grows in a thick, highly crowded forest. The tree has a thin bark whose colour lies between grey and green. Oleo-gum resin of optimal quality is harvested from the tree after the tree has grown fully, which mostly takes about 8 years. A healthy boswellia tree produces about 1-2 kg of gum every year. The tree is quite resistant to such adversities as drought and fire, in comparison to other similar species. The boswellia tree grows in altitudes of 1000-1200m above sea level. The tree mostly grows in neutral, poorly drained, and shallow soils, where its counterparts wouldn’t survive. Also, it grows optimally at temperatures between 1-50°C.

For centuries resin from the boswellia tree has been used as incense in various spiritual and cultural observances. Most ancient texts that have quoted civilisation has mentioned the resin at one point in time. At some point, the resin was viewed as being quite valuable hence was used as currency in barter trade. It was only exchanged for gold and ivory. In their ancient texts, Egyptians likened the resin, which is normally shaped like tears, to the ‘tears of Horus’. The latter was the son of Osiris, the god of fertility, death, and resurrection into the afterlife, and his wife Isis. In Babylon, boswellia resin was added to wine that was taken by detainees before they were condemned to death e.g. through beheading. It was believed that the resin contributed to some form of ‘numbness’ therefore the convicts went in ready for what was to befall them.
