About Bacopa Monnieri
Bacopa monnieri is a indigenous creeping plant that is relatively small in size and is mainly located in marshlands, especially at the margins of streams, rivers, ponds, wells, and other water bodies. The climbing plant has its roots in Sri Lanka, India, and the Mascarene island of Mauritius, Reunion, Indochina, and Rodrigues. Bacopa Monnieri is synonymous with Lysimachia monnieria, Bramia indica, Herpestes monniera, Gratiola monnieria, and Moniera cureifolia. The more commonly known terms are Brahmi or “herb of grace” in English. Other vernacular names that are quite popular in the Indian space include Sambranichettu, Brahmibuti, Jal Brahmi, Brahmi vazhukkai, and Bramishak. Arabs commonly refer to it as Farfakh which means “the hottest tree”. In China, it is referred to as Jia ma chi Xian. The Swedish people call it Litet tjockblad. In Germany the term used is Wasserysop. The Nepalese call it Medha giree which translates to “mountain of wisdom”. Bacopa monnieri, which is also the specific name used to refer to the plant, is categorised under the Scrophulariaceae family. The genus Bacopa contains 55 other species that thrive in wetlands and marshy areas. Bacopa mostly does well at low altitudes but can grow comfortably at elevations slightly greater than 700m above sea level as is the case in Western Nepal. In Bangladesh, it flourishes in the coastal regions and rice paddy fields. In China, it mostly grows on sandy beaches which are at an elevation lower than 1000 meters, and on islands like Taiwan.
The bacopa monnieri plant branches severally with the branches extending to lengths greater than 35 cm. The branches are succulent and have roots emerging from their nodes. The leaves are green, pulpy, elliptical and each located opposite to each other on the branch. The flowers are pale violet, irregularly shaped, and have thin pedicels. The capsules holding the seeds are also succulent and ovate. The seeds are similarly shaped but have a light colour. All parts of the plant i.e. leaves, flowers, seeds, stem, and roots, are used in preparing bacopa monnieri capsules. They are properly dried and ground into a fine powder. After that, they are processed further to increase the concentration of important compounds that are contained and packed in capsule form. Bacopa monnieri tolerates a variety of climates and soils. Tropical conditions with high temperatures and humidity are favourable for the fast growth of this plant. This plant fruits and flowers all year round.
The use of bacopa Monnieri was first captured back in the 6th century A.D. Sacred Sanskrit publications like the Astanga Hridaya, Sushruta Samhita and Charaka Samhita stated that the Bacopa monnieri formed an important part of the Medhya Rasayana. Medhya Rasayana was a group of herbs that were used to rejuvenate the mind and improved the capacity to reason clearly. Its famous name Brahmi was borrowed from that of the Hindu god, Brahma who blessed people with creativity. Brahmi stands for “mental energy." For centuries, Indians have used Bacopa monnieri to bless the babies whenever someone gave birth. They believed that this would make their children more knowledgeable as they grew.

My experience with the purchase was great. I think the product might be having a positive effect but perhaps too early to judge. Personally, I am finding my reaction to it quite “binding”.
